East Midlands Gateway Strategic Rail Freight Interchange


Trackwork were awarded the contract to supply and install the permanent way infrastructure at East Midlands Gateway.

This extension project at East Midlands Gateway, doubles the capacity of the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI). The creation of two additional rail sidings, a cripple siding, a further 12 acres of container storage, and parking for 115 HGV’s provides new, low carbon freight connections from UK container ports, with a capacity for up to 16 daily trains.

The scope of works included:

  • Installation of 1.5km of ballasted FB CEN56 rail, on serviceable F27 sleepers
  • Installation of 1 No. CV9.25 flatbottom turnout and 2 No. BV8 turnouts, of which 2 No. connected into existing infrastructure and were installed within a time critical possession
  • Installation of 2 No. fixed double raker buffer stops
  • Installation of 1no. proprietary Road Crossing System, including taking up existing roads. Work undertaken within a blockade.
  • Installation of track within an insitu road crossing
  • Tamping

All works were completed within a live operational rail freight terminal environment. A carefully planned and approved safe system of work was established, enabling trains to utilise the two existing sidings.

All permanent way works were delivered via Trackwork’s core track installation teams, and Trackwork manufactured and supplied permanent way materials including S&C.
